You might wonder why I am re-using worn-out boxes for my operating tasks. There are two reasons:
Platforms that have grown too slow for Microsoft products serve fine using decent operating platforms. Thanks to Microsoft's code bloat and creeping featurism this happens very quickly. (Did you know that writing and extensively using private versions of printf(3) is considered a sport among Microsoft programmers?)
At the time of this writing even the slowest Pentium platforms are fast enough to compile and install a complete operating system in just a few hours. Frankly, I don't see a point in having this task done in less than an hour.
Traditionally I tend to spend as little money as possible for computers. To a small extend this attributes to a stingy attitude: Any state-of-the-art PC always costs at least 1000 € but is old-fashioned latest six months later. This a waste of money and serves the computer industry only. And even state-of-the-art boxes are slow compared to what I use at work, so my private machines are behind anyway.
